Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 may come out in May 2022, but it won’t be a new generation of chips

A little more than two weeks ago, the presentation of the flagship chip Qualcomm of the new generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 took place. The newest platform is created on the 4 nm process technology and runs on the ARMv9 architecture. The chipsets are manufactured by Samsung. However, it is expected that from May 2022, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will no longer be released by the South Korean giant, but by the Taiwanese TSMC, and to avoid confusion, Qualcomm intends to change the name of the chip. According to industry sources, the processor will most likely be named Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, although a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ variant is also possible.

TSMC’s order volume is reported to exceed the number of chipsets that Samsung manufactures. This may be because TSMC’s 4nm technology is more mature and provides improved energy efficiency.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 offers a more powerful Adreno GPU, 4X the processing power of a neural processor, Spectra’s first 18-bit digital image processor, and support for 5G networks with download speeds up to 10Gbps. According to benchmarks, the Adreno GPU performance in Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is on par with the Apple A15 Bionic.
