At least four flights that were destined for the city of Porto Velho, in Rondônia, needed to be cancelled or diverted between this Wednesday (14) and Thursday (15) due to the weather conditions in the capital. The city dawned covered in smoke of fires that affect the region.
Porto Velho Airport confirmed to CNN that the operations work by instruments that is, sensors and receivers on board aircraft and air navigation support equipment are used, since “weather conditions do not allow landings and takeoffs with visual references “.
According to Latam, flights LA3740 from São Paulo (SP), Guarulhos (SP), to Porto Velho, and LA3668, from Brasília (DF), to Porto Velho (RO), this Wednesday (14), were diverted to Manaus International Airport (AM).
The company said the relocation had to be done due to the closure of the Porto Velho (RO) airport due to smoke. Latam reiterated, in a statement, that it “adopts all technical and operational safety measures to ensure a safe trip for everyone”.
Gol reported that due to adverse weather conditions, flight G3 1478, between Brasília (DF) and the capital of Rondônia, was diverted to Cuiabá (MT), on Wednesday night (14), returning to the federal capital and being canceled due to there being no improvements in Porto Velho (RO).
The company also said that as a consequence of this cancellation, flight G3 1477, from Porto Velho (RO) to Brasília (DF), which would be operated in the early hours of this Thursday (15), was also canceled .
The airline reported that extra operations were created for the night of this Thursday (15) to serve impacted customers. Gol also reinforced that “all actions related to flights were taken with a focus on safety”.
Record number of fires
In July of this year, Rondônia broke the record for the number of fires in the month in the last two decades, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Last month alone, 1,618 fires were recorded across the state. The record for fires in the month occurred in 2005, with 1,947 fires.
As of this Wednesday (14), the state has already recorded 3,585 fire outbreaks detected by Inpe satellites.
In addition to Rondônia, Manaus, in Amazonas, is also suffering from fires.
