China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) is investing $ 8.87 billion to build a chip manufacturing plant in Shanghai. Thus, a large contract manufacturer of semiconductor products intends to tackle the global shortage of microcircuits in the light of Beijing’s efforts to strengthen the country’s technological independence.
The 300mm wafer facility will be able to process 100,000 wafers a month by manufacturing integrated circuits, according to SMIC. With the help of a joint venture, a controlling stake in which belongs to SMIC, the factory plans to master the norms of 28 nm or less. The joint venture partner is Lingang FTZ.
Earlier, SMIC announced plans to expand production in Shenzhen and Beijing.
