Slavery time: Operation recovers historical documents in RS

Historical documents dated from the time of slavery That were stolen, were recovered, on the morning of Friday (25), by the Public Prosecutor of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS). The archives were in possession of two siblings who were investigated and acted in the business of selling rare books.

According to information from the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco) of MPRS, the materials, which should be under the guard of the government, were disclosed on social networks by the investigated. One of the brothers was offering the documents for $ 10,000.

During the operation, three other volumes of public documents were found in a sebum of Porto Alegre, one of them being the registration of Emancipation of enslaved and two export records of the port of Rio Grande, dated from the 1860s and 1870s.

“Two search and seizure warrants were fulfilled at addresses of the municipality of the North Coast. Gaeco agents had the support of four servants from the state’s public archive and the Military Brigade, ”said the MPRS.

The rescued documents will be analyzed, especially to prove the origin and to allocate them to the appropriate place. In addition to the seized documents, other files and electronic equipment were taken by the agents. Two documents that were in possession of the investigated were sold to buyers in Minas Gerais.

“These are two documents of public origin produced by imperial government agencies in Rio Grande, at the time when it was still a province. The records would be from the 19th century, with facts dated between 1857 and 1859. One of them details slave deaths, and the other, penalties and punishment to punish what the system of the time understood as crimes committed by these enslaved people,” the MP explained.

On April 14, posts were made on Instagram by the brothers, in which they said they had two historical documents showing part of the Brazilian slave regime of the former province of Rio Grande. According to them, the files were rescued from a notary’s fire.

Upon learning of a state government notification, prosecutor Camile de Mattos made an analysis that found great evidence that the documents are true and that they were in possession of the investigated.

“Given the possibility that they could sell the records with possible public origin, the prosecutor called the 10th core of Gaeco/Sul and, with the prosecutor Rogério Caldas, obtained in court two search and seizure warrants in residences of the investigated, in Capão da Canoa,” confirmed the prosecutor.

The Public Prosecution Service pointed out that one of the documents was stolen from the Arroio Grande Museum in 2012 and another stolen from the Rio Grande Registry. These facts will be cleared by Gaeco.

For Gaeco, the crimes calculated according to article 305 of the Penal Code would be “destruction, suppression or concealment of public or private documents”, but also “with violation of Law 8.159/1991, which provides for the National Policy of Public and Private Archives”.
