A market with new investments, prospects and stability in sales after the strong growth of the two years 2020-2021 due to the pandemic, is that of electronic supermarkets in Greece. In fact, after the first Sklavenitis, which maintains the highest sales and AB Vassilopoulos that follows, a new force emerges that listens to the name efood market and is the distribution arm of groceries of the efood platform.
Stability in the first quarter of 2022
This market “recorded” sales of 255 million euros in 2021, with growth of 56%. It followed, in fact, the growth at the level of 262% and the jump from 45 million euros in 2019 to 163 million euros in 2020, according to data from the measurement platform, eRetail Audit, of the Convert Group. Regarding the first quarter of 2022, the electronics supermarket sector managed to stay close to the levels of the first quarter of 2021 (sales increase of 282%), when Greece was under lockdown status with an increase in sales. Especially in the period January – March of this year, the online super market sector lost only 4% compared to the corresponding quarter last year, showing that it maintains its strength. At the same time, looking at the twelve months April 2021-March 2022 compared to the twelve months April 2020 – March 2021, sales were increased by 23%.
The investments of the protagonists in e-commerce
In any case, this is an industry that has been “raising” a lot of investments lately. The case of Sklavenitis is typical and recent. In mid-April, the largest supermarket chain launched the new e-hub in Kifissia, which serves daily the preparation and delivery of the company’s electronic orders in the northeastern suburbs and surrounding areas.
AB Vassilopoulos has planned to create two more fulfillment centers corresponding to the one it set up in the area of Rentis to serve its online store.
The creation of the specific e-commerce supply centers is placed within the next two years, one of which is planned for Attica and the second for Thessaloniki.
For its part, Masouti has planned the operation of its first darkstore in Attica within the spring of this year, with the chain of Northern Greece emphasizing its electronic sales.
Regarding the alternative market players, Wolt Market for its part has planned during the current period the opening of a fifth dark store in Attica and specifically in Nea Ionia. Already, it has created dark stores in Neos Kosmos, Maroussi, Peristeri and Glyfada in terms of serving Attica. In addition, it maintains two such distribution points in Thessaloniki as well as another in Patras with the plan to provide further development in the near future.
Pet products continue their upward trend
The product categories that moved up in sales in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the corresponding period of 2021 are pet products with 11%, continuing the upward trend recorded recently as a sub-category of goods. Also, care products and food for babies and children increased by 3% and stationery and cleaning products by 2%.
The average value of a basket appears stable – compared to last year – in the first quarter of 2022 at 78 euros, including VAT. However, there is a decrease of 4% in the number of products in the electronic baskets.
