Japanese television confirmed that the former prime minister of the Land of the Rising Sun, Shinzo Abe, died in Kashihara hospital after being the victim of an attack during an electoral event. A doctor at the facility said Abe died at 10.03 am Italian time.
His condition appeared very serious from the start: hit in the right side of the neck and left collarbone by at least two bullets, fired from behind and at close range. He immediately fainted and seemed already in circulatory arrest in first aid. His wife Abe, Akie, reached the hospital shortly before 10 am Italian.
It was 4.30 in the morning in Italy at the time of the attack, 11.30 in Japan. Abe was in Nara to support a Liberal Democratic Party candidate. The attacker would have approached the former prime minister from behind. The alleged bomber, a 41-year-old man, was arrested at the scene of the attack, near Yamatosaidaiji station. Tetsuya Yamagami, this is his name, is a former military man and was part of the Japanese maritime self-defense until 2005. He allegedly told the police that he was “dissatisfied” with Abe and that he had attacked him for this with a self-built weapon, a sort shotgun with short barrels. He fired two shots, the only ones he had available. In Japan, gun controls are very strict and there are very few cases of armed violence.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in Bali for the G20, said: “I am deeply saddened and concerned about the attack on Abe. It is a very sad day for Japan“. All world leaders have sent messages to Tokyo remembering Abe, the longest-serving politically prime minister in Japan’s history after World War II: he led the country between 2006 and 2007 and from 2012 to 2020.
