Some 12 million people in Shanghai, nearly half the population of China’s financial center, are now in areas considered to be at lowest risk for Covid-19, meaning they can leave their homes, the government said on Friday. 29).
Shanghai, which faces China’s biggest Covid-19 outbreak, put the entire city on lockdown earlier this month, although it cautiously relaxed some restrictions in residential areas that have gone two weeks without a positive case.
The city classifies each housing unit according to three levels of risk, designating those without a positive case for 14 days as “prevention zones”, allowing residents to go outside for “appropriate activities”.
As of Thursday (28), the number of people living in high-risk “sealed and controlled zones” subject to the strictest measures was 5.3 million, a drop of 6.6 million since the last readjustment in April 20th.
“The number of people in these areas has clearly dropped,” Zhao Dandan, deputy director of the Shanghai health commission, told a news conference.
Another 5.93 million medium-risk residents can now, in principle, leave their apartments, but are still confined to their condominiums.
The government said 52 people had died of Covid-19 on April 28, up from 47 the day before. Their average age was 84 years. The city reported 9,545 new asymptomatic cases on Thursday, in addition to 5,487 symptomatic ones.
