Girls aged 10 to 14 are the biggest victims of sexual violence in Brazil. The data appears in the Violence Atlas, released this Tuesday (18) by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea) and the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP).
According to the document, there is an “epidemic” of sexual violence against girls in the country. In 2022, sexual violence affected 49.6% of girls in this age group in the country. The numbers were collected from the records of the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan), of the Ministry of Health. In the age group between 0 and 9 years, cases of sexual violence are 30.4%.
“Data from the Violence Atlas shows us that Brazilian women are exposed to violence from birth to the end of their lives,” explains Samira Bueno, executive director of the Brazilian Public Security Forum.
Physical violence
The data contained in the Violence Atlas also shows that from the age of 15, physical violence becomes the most common type suffered by women.
- 15 to 19 years old — 35.1% of cases of violence
- 20 to 24 years old — 49% of cases of violence
- 25 to 59 years old — 40% of cases of violence
