The doctor Giovanni Quintella Bezerra accused of rape a patient during childbirth, is already being investigated by the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro like a serial criminal.
“By the repetition of the criminal actions that we observed and by the compulsive nature of the defendant’s actions, we can say that he is a serial criminal”, said the delegate responsible for the case Bárbara Lomba this Wednesday (13).
In addition to the victim in the video, the police are investigating whether five other women were also sexually assaulted by the anesthesiologist. They or their relatives went to the Women’s Police Station (DEAM), in São João de Meriti, Rio Janeiro, to report the doctor.
According to the delegate Bárbara, the first testimonies and evidence collected are strong indications that Bezerra would have drugged the victims, exclusively, for the practice of rape.
“With all the information we’ve collected so far from the victims we’ve heard from, in all cases, sedation seemed unnecessary, given at the end of the procedure. There is a report of questioning made to him (Giovanni) about the reason for the sedation and there was no explanation. The victim wasn’t nervous, she wasn’t agitated, there were no complications from the surgery. So, with all these pieces reconciled, everything indicates that the sedation was made for the practice of rape”, says the delegate.
According to Barbara, all the material seized was sent for forensic examination this Wednesday, including the phone that originated the recordings and the sedatives that were used on the patients.
Also on Wednesday, the Civil Police hope to hear from the husband of the woman who was raped during the cesarean, last Sunday (10). The delegate was unable to inform if she already knows what happened, but hopes to hear from her as soon as she is discharged.
On Tuesday (12), the Rio de Janeiro justice system converted the arrest in flagrante delicto into preventive detention. In the decision, the magistrate drew attention to the seriousness of the case and highlighted the brutality and cruelty of the action.
Giovanni Bezerra is isolated in a cell at the Bangú 8 prison, in the West Zone of the capital.
Cremerj reported that it suspended Giovanni Quintella Bezerra from the medical staff. As a result, he is prevented from practicing medicine throughout the country, until the end of the process, which may permanently revoke the registration.
“The measure is a resource to protect the population and ensure good medical practice”, says a note from the institution.
