Hundreds of supporters of far-right organizations demonstrated tonight in front of the presidential palace in Belgrade, shouting slogans against the president of the Republic, Aleksandar Vucic, whom they accuse of “sold out Kosovo». The protesters at one point tried to approach the main entrance of the building, but the police, who had been deployed around the building, managed to push them back.
The concentration of extreme rightwith the slogan of defending Kosovo, started late on Tuesday afternoon in front of the statue of the last Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, which is located directly opposite the presidential palace.
The demonstration was organized by the extremist, racist organization “People’s Patrols”, which in the past has been held responsible for attacks against immigrants as well as gypsies. Officials of this organization publicly claim that they maintain excellent relations with the Russian paramilitary group “Wagner”. Besides, at today’s gathering many of the participants wore the Wagner emblem and the letter “Z” on their jackets which is the symbol of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the far-right gathering, in addition to slogans against Vučić, slogans in favor of Russia and Putin while many protesters were holding Russian flags.
The leader of the organization “People’s patrols” Damnian Knezevic in his speech called for the rejection of the Franco-German plan, stating that he prefers a “Russian solution” for the issue of Kosovo. Knezevic warned that there would be strong resistance to the implementation of the European plan for Kosovo using the phrase: “I swear to you, we’re ready to do a lot more than just cause riots.”
In the meantime, as announced by Serbian police, on the highway outside the city of Sremska Mitrovica, two members of the “People’s Patrols” organization were arrested because the car they were traveling in a hunting carbine with binoculars and five bullets was found. The announcement states that those arrested were heading to Belgrade by road to participate in the far-right demonstration.
