The United States Special Presidential to Ukraine said Russia’s deadliest attack on the country this year highlights “why President Trump is working hard to end this war.”
Russian attacks hit the city of Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine, this Sunday (13), while residents celebrated the Sunday of Ramos. The attacks killed at least 34 people – including two children – and injured almost 100, according to the Ukraine Ministry of Interior.
“Today’s attack on Ramos Sunday, by Russian forces against Sumy civilian targets surpasses any limit of decency,” wrote Keith Kellogg in X. “As a former military leader, I understand the definition of targets and this is wrong. That’s why President Trump is working hard to end this war,” he added.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the attacks as “horrible” in a statement that echoed Kellogg’s comments about US efforts to solve the war.
In recent months, the relationship between the US and Ukraine has remained unstable, as President Donald Trump tries to negotiate a mineral agreement and a ceasefire in the region.
Trump temporarily suspended military aid and interrupted intelligence sharing after an argument with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in February about the mineral agreement. But both were restored shortly after Ukraine agreed in principle with a US ceasefire proposal.
However, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not accept the US ceasefire agreement, and on Friday (11), Trump asked Moscow to “move” to the end of the war.
“Many people are dying, thousands a week, in a terrible and meaningless war – a war that should never have happened, and would not have happened if I were president !!!” Trump wrote.
