Senior Ukrainian official: EU sanctions against Russia are not enough

The latest EU sanctions against Russia, which bans most of its oil imports, are “insufficient” and the pace of implementation so far is very slow, a senior Ukrainian presidency official said in a speech in Madrid today.

“If you ask me, I would say too late in implementation, too late and certainly not enough,” said Ihor Zovka, deputy chief of staff to the Ukrainian president.

“Obviously we are not satisfied. If we were satisfied, we would have started the liberation of Mariupol immediately and we would have expelled the Russian forces from Donbas. We believe in the promises,” he said in response to a question after his speech.

In the face of tougher retaliation against Moscow after the Russian invasion of Ukraine three months ago, EU leaders agreed in Brussels yesterday on a new package of sanctions against Russia, which officials say provides for an immediate ban on two-thirds and now oil imports from Russia and 90% by the end of the year.

According to Zovka, Ukraine is not satisfied with the pace of arms shipments from the West.
