“Selfish” by Britney Spears from 2011 beats new song by Justin Timberlake

Last Friday (26), Britney Spears' song “Selfish”, originally released in 2011, reached the top of the iTunes charts in the United States. The track beat out another song of the same name: the latest release by Britney Spears' ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake.

This Saturday morning (27), the song remained firm and strong in second position. Even though it fell one, the track remains two categories above Timberlake's “Selfish”.

Justin Timberlake announced the new album and released the new song last Thursday (25).

And why is this important?

Both the 2021 documentary “Framing Britney Spears: The Life of a Star” and the artist's autobiography, released last year, addressed the pop princess' relationship with Timberlake.

They met as children at the Mickey Mouse Club and had a relationship as teenagers, between 1999 and 2002.

In her autobiography, Spears spoke about the breakup, which became extremely public due to her cheating on her boyfriend. What the public didn't know is that Justin also cheated on Britney Spears – a lot. Another aspect of the book is that Britney talked about the abortion she had after becoming pregnant with Timberlake, which she, according to what she wrote, would never have done if it had been up to her alone.

In the book, Britney also spoke about the pressure put on her by Justin Timberlake to have an abortion. “To this day, it was one of the most agonizing things I have experienced in my life,” Spears wrote in the book “Britney Spears: The Woman in Me.”

The documentary “Framing Britney Spears: The Life of a Star” also focused on the breakup and how the media treated it better and gave more space to Timberlake's narrative.
