The Vatican officially announced the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88 on Monday (21). The announcement was made by Cardinal Kevin Farrell Vatican Camerlengo.
According to the official statement, Pope Francis passed away 7:35 am in the morning. Cardinal Farrell stated: “With deep pain, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francesco. The bishop of Rome Francesco returned to his father’s house.”
A life dedicated to the service
The Camerlengo highlighted the dedication of the Pontiff throughout his life: “His entire life was devoted to the service of the Lord and his home. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with universal fidelity, courage and love, in particular in favor of the poorest and marginal.”
Francisco, known for his voice in defense of the poor and his reforms in Catholic Church leaves a legacy of significant changes in the institution.
His pontificate was marked by gestures of humility and a more inclusive and merciful approach.
Cardinal Farrell completed the announcement expressing gratitude for the example left by the Pope:
“With immense gratitude for his example of true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we recommend the soul of the Pope Francesco to God’s infinite and merciful love one and three.”
The Argentine pontiff underwent episodes of respiratory difficulties earlier this year. He was hospitalized for almost 40 days at Gemelli Hospital and was discharged on March 23.
Pope Francis
On Easter Sunday, the pontiff made a brief appearance in the Vatican to give the blessing “Urbi et orbi” (for the city and the world) and asked for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Francisco wished a happy Easter for the faithful present and asked an advisor to read the message.
In the text, the pontiff said the situation in Gaza was “dramatic and deplorable.” The Pope also asked the Palestinian militant group Hamas to release the remaining hostages and condemned what he called a “worrying” trend of anti -Semitism in the world.
“I express my proximity to the sufferings… of all the Israeli people and the Palestinian people,” the message said.
Francisco, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, took command of the Holy See in March 2013. He marked the history of the Catholic Church as the first Latin American Pope and the first Jesuit to occupy the position.
