See how AI will be part of your daily life in 2024

After a year of euphoria about artificial intelligence in 2023 it looks like 2024 will be the year to start seeing AI in action in our daily lives .

You recent releases from Samsung, Google, Microsoft and several other technology brands are bringing the possibilities of generative artificial intelligence to the software we use every day at work and the applications we carry in our pockets.

A CNN heard technology and artificial intelligence experts to understand how AI should be increasingly present in our routine from this year onwards and what should change in practice with these new possibilities and tools.

“I think we will start to incorporate this type of tool more and more into our daily lives, whether to help us in the process of producing some content or with something we need to do, as well as helping us in processes of research, of seeking information”, says Diogo Cortiz, professor at PUC-SP.

According to Cortiz, AI should start to function “more or less like a work companion to help us with various tasks”.

As explained by Álvaro Machado, associate professor at Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo) and partner at Instituto Locomotiva, there was a relevant leap from the perspective of AI, as results that were previously only achieved in truly generative tools such as ChatGPT – which makes cloud processing – became possible on smartphones or notebooks, whose processing takes place on the device itself.

“We have the prospect of truly intelligent assistants on devices such as smartphones and others. This will change the consumption of this type of information and our relationship with devices over the next few years”, said Machado.

To the misunderstandings today's artificial

To exemplify what could change with this advancement in technology, Machado cited the virtual assistants that already exist, such as Alexa, from Amazon, Siri, from Apple, among many others, and called them “artificial disintelligence”.

“[Os assistentes] they are stupid. And this inability of theirs is expressed in the most trivial things [simples]like, for example, you type on your Apple cell phone and the word suggestions are horrible”, says Machado.

As Machado explained, the advancement of AI can make these assistants present in homes, computers and cell phones more useful in helping with any request – and even in understanding these requests.

End of autocorrect errors?

Some practical examples of how AI can change our experience with these tools:

Virtual assistants should become much more useful for more things.

Currently, to ask Alexa, Amazon's virtual assistant, for anything, you have to give a clear command, otherwise it's difficult to get the desired result.

“[Com a IA generativa], you could say: 'Alexa, you know that song that is usually played at weddings, can you play it for me?'. She can begin to understand this because she will generatively process the information. Nowadays, either you give the name of the song and the artist or nothing comes out”, explained Machado.

With this, Alexa and other virtual assistants would become much easier to use, becoming more useful for activities such as searching and comparing flight prices, shopping, looking for an apartment, finding emails and much more, just by asking.

The automatic corrector can make good suggestions instead of making us make mistakes. With AI, perhaps messages with grotesque errors made by the cell phone's automatic corrector will come to an end.

No more suggesting “é” in place of “e” or feeling embarrassed after sending something stupid on WhatsApp to someone at work. The broker's suggestions can be useful, including adjusting the tone of the conversation.

The new Samsung Galaxy S24 line has AI tools on the smartphone's keyboard that promise to help the user be more formal or more relaxed depending on the tone of the conversation.

Using unfamiliar applications, programs or software will be easier. Instead of taking a course for a few weeks to learn the tricks of Excel or how to use Photoshop, AI can teach you.

It's all a matter of dialogue

Ultimately, the biggest change that artificial intelligence brings is in the way we interact with technology.

If since the creation of software we have been accustomed to giving commands for technology to execute, now it will be a matter of asking. And it's much easier to make a request than to memorize each command and what it does.

Junior Borneli, an AI specialist in Brazil and CEO of StartSe, describes it this way: “I think we will start to interact with artificial intelligence as if we were talking to a very intelligent friend.”

The big challenge in adapting to AI is abandoning a command language that users have been accustomed to for years in order to extract the best that the tools can offer.

“If you use the most advanced AI algorithm to search for information in the same way you do today on Google, the results will be terrible”, said Borneli. “They are natural language models. They understand natural language to make it easier for us to access it.”
