US Special Forces killed ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi on a counterterrorism mission in northwest Syria on Wednesday night, US President Joe Biden announced Thursday morning. thursday (3).
Biden spoke from the White House to announce that the operation took “a great terrorist leader off the battlefield”, saying the US chose a special forces strike to minimize civilian casualties.
The Pentagon will conduct a more thorough review after the attack takes place. But a government official said that “at the beginning of the operation, the terrorist target exploded a bomb that killed him and his own family members, including women and children.”
The Department of Defense released the following image showing what the complex looked like after the US-led attack
“While we are still evaluating the results of this operation, this appears to be the same dastardly terrorist tactic we saw in the 2019 operation that eliminated [Abu Bakr] al-Baghdadi,” the US government official said.
Government officials said the US learned months ago that Qurayshi was living in the complex. He never left, living on the third floor with his family and running the terrorist operation through a messenger network. Families with no connection to ISIS lived on the first floor, apparently unaware of the terrorist two floors above them.
