Searches for “extratropical cyclone” peaked in RS when phenomena devastated the state

The 2023 extratropical cyclone season hit the South region hard, especially the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The devastation caused by the effects of the passage of systems of this type caused spikes in searches for it, according to Google Trends.

The two moments in which the term “extratropical cyclone” was most searched for were the weeks from July 9th to 15th and September 3rd to 9th, two moments in which the people of Rio Grande do Sul suffered from the phenomenon.

In the first case, in July, 52 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul were hit by the effects of the passage of an extratropical cyclone, leaving 16 dead, 234 people homeless and 331 homeless. Another 17,399 inhabitants of the state were affected by the weather event.

The concepts of homeless and homeless are different. A homeless person is someone who has lost their home and is in a public shelter. The homeless person had to leave their home — not necessarily lose it — and is not in shelters, but rather in the home of a relative, friend or acquaintance, for example.
