Sea water invaded the leisure area on Avenida Delfim Moreira, in Leblon, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, in the early hours of this Monday (1), due to the strong undertow that hit the Rio coast.
According to the Rio de Janeiro Operations Center, a hangover warning for the city’s coast was issued by the Brazilian Navy and warns of waves that can reach up to 3 meters in height.
In images that went viral on social media, it is possible to see the moment when the sea water invades the boardwalk and takes over both sides of the avenue. In addition, a cyclist is recorded being knocked down by the water. See the video :
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, warned the residents of Rio who use the Leblon waterfront about the waves that hit the road, but clarified that contractors from the Municipal Urban Cleaning Company were already cleaning the Avenue this morning.
The Navy’s alert is valid until midnight next Tuesday (2) and asks that activities such as navigation, fishing and cycling on the coast be avoided.
