A recent study in England revealed that air pollution contributes to inflammation of the lungs that can activate preexisting cancer genes. Before, the most accepted hypothesis was that the polluting particles would induce a genetic mutation in the organ and that this process would lead to the disease.
Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the world, after breast cancer. In 2020, more than 2 million new cases of the disease were diagnosed, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). In Brazil, there were more than 30 thousand new patients and a similar number of deaths: almost 29 thousand.
In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents an overview of the impact of new scientific discoveries on how air pollution acts on the human body and increases the chances of developing lung cancer.
To describe how the fight against pollution can contribute to the fight against cancer, oncologists William Nassib William Junior, from the National Cancer Institute (Inca), and Marcos André Costa, from Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, participate in this episode.
