Scientists claim to have discovered a new color During a study in which they controlled the photoreceptor activity of the human eye by cell. Baptized from “Olo” the new color is a greenish blue with high saturation, but it is Impossible to be seen with the naked eye.
The study, published in Science Advances magazine This month, he presented a new principle for color display, named Oz, in which retinal cells responsible for converting light into electrical signals that the brain interprets as vision are stimulated one by one through lasers. In the experiment, scientists directed light only to one of the types of cells (cone m), without stimulating the others (cone l and s), something that would never occur under normal conditions, when the three types of sky are stimulated by light at the same time.
Thus, it is possible to observe unprecedented colors, outside the limited scale observable by the natural view.
The new color observed by the participants of this study was described as “Blue Blue”, “Green”, “Blue Blue” and “Green, slightly blue”. They all pointed out that the saturation of the color observed during the experiment is much larger than the saturation seen in the colors observable to the naked eye.
In an interview with BBC, Professor Ren NG of the University of California – who is one of the authors of the study and also one of the five individuals who could see the color – described this way: “Let’s say you spend a lifetime seeing only pink, pink pastel. And then one day you are going to work and someone is wearing a most intense baby pink shirt you’ve ever seen, and they say it is a new color and we call it red.”
Although it is impossible to reproduce the “olo” visibly, participants say that the color seen in the image below is the one that would be closest to that observed during the experiment.
