The English Ministry of Health (NHS) commissioned the review of more than 400 scientific studies that dealt with electronic cigarettes, with the aim of understanding the effects of prolonged consumption and its possible impacts as a harm reduction tool for tobacco consumers. – you “vapes” These are products that have been regulated in England for over 10 years and consumer behavior in the country is constantly monitored.

The report was conducted by researchers from King’s College Londonunder the leadership of Ann McNeill — an important researcher and professor of tobacco addiction at the university —, taking the place of the most recent and most complete independent study on electronic cigarettes carried out to date.

“Through scientific studies, health agencies are able to monitor the health effects of smokers who seek electronic cigarettes as a reduced-risk alternative. However, this is only possible when the product is regulated”, comments Renato Veras, doctor and consultant at BAT Brasil.

The results of the review, published in September 2022, reiterate the conclusions of previous reports, that is, they reaffirm that the consumption of electronic cigarettes is substantially less harmful to health when compared to conventional cigarettes.

“We previously stated in our 2015 report that e-cigarette use represents only a small fraction of the risk of smoking and is at least 95% less harmful than regular cigarettes. In other words, ‘vapes’ are at least 20 times less harmful than cigarettes. Based on the evidence reviewed, we believe these estimates remain broadly accurate, at least in the short and medium term.”

Based on the most recent scientific evidence, England chose to adhere to the “vapes” as important allies in the construction of a harm reduction policy for tobacco consumers. The use of electronic cigarettes to replace conventional cigarettes is a government priority so that it is possible to reach the target of just 5% of smokers in the country by 2030, which according to WHO criteria means a cigarette-free country (smoke free).

“Only with data from reliable sources and amplification of correct information, based on the regulatory experience of other countries, will it be possible for society to understand that there is a less harmful option aimed at adult smokers in Brazil as part of a risk reduction strategy to health”, concludes Veras.

note:

Vaporizers and heated tobacco products are products intended for people over 18 years of age, just like cigarettes. These products are not without risks.

Reducing the risks of vaporizers and heated tobacco products is based on the most recent scientific evidence available and provided that traditional cigarette consumption is completely replaced.
