The governor of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello (PL), declared on Tuesday (31) a state of public calamity in the cities of Laurentino, Rio do Oeste, Rio do Sul and Taió due to the heavy rains hitting the state.
The decree published in the Official Gazette of Santa Catarina is valid for 180 days.
“The rain hit our state very intensely, in such a way that several municipalities are still asking for help. These four municipalities in which we declared a public calamity were the ones that suffered the most during the month of October, with damage to agriculture, commerce, and the lives of our people from Santa Catarina”, stated the governor.
This Thursday (2), all the gates of the Oeste Dam, in Taió, were closed, aiming to reduce the flow of rivers downstream before the arrival of the rains predicted for the next few days.
According to the Santa Catarina Civil Defense, a municipality may have a state of public calamity declared when the intensity of the disaster is classified as level 3, that is, when there is massive human, material and environmental damage, in addition to economic and social losses.
