“The Taming of the Shrew” was one of the first comic plays written by William Shakespeare. During the plot, issues such as marriage and female independence were discussed. A few centuries later, specifically in 1999, Hollywood turned its eyes to the medieval work, and an adaptation was created: “10 Things I Hate About You”, by Gil Junger.
25 years later the film is still loved, even full of clichés – but as brilliant as its 16th century essence. In the story, Kat is the rebellious girl, and her sister Bianca is the popular girl at school. Both live with their father, whose biggest fear is seeing his daughters pregnant.
Therefore, he created a rule that the younger sister could only date if the eldest daughter was also in a relationship. Cameron, the “nice guy”, falls in love with Bianca and will do anything for the girl's attention, including hiring Patrick, the bad boy, to seduce his beloved's older sister.
And like any other brilliant cliché, expectations are broken: Kat is not just the girl who wears combat boots and hates everyone. Just as Patrick is not only the bad boy who enjoys committing crimes for fun as all the rumors suggest.
The nostalgic atmosphere of the 90s, contradictory love and young Heath Ledger are a treat for lovers of romantic comedies.
