With the resumption of the expiration of National Driver’s Licenses (CNHs), documents expired between March and April 2020 must be renewed by December 30 of this year.
Since March of last year, the first critical period of the Covid-19 pandemic, until now, the expiration of CNHs had been suspended.
To meet the demand, the state of São Paulo will carry out joint efforts to renew the document this and next Saturday, December 11th and 18th.
In all, 15,000 vacancies will be allocated to the action, which will be made at all Poupatempos posts. This number represents a 30% increase in the service grid for this service, according to the government.
The simplified renewal of the Driver’s License can be done through the Poupatempo website (www.poupatempo.sp.gov.br), the Poupatempo Digital application and self-service totems, in addition to the electronic platforms of Detran SP.
Thus, the citizen does not need to go to a Poupatempo unit, just follow the online service step-by-step and undergo the medical examination at a designated clinic. The new document will be delivered by Post to the registration address.
Drivers with a CNH in categories C, D or E need to take the drug test in a laboratory accredited by the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) in advance, as the report will be requested during the medical exam. This exam is valid for two and a half years for children under 70 years old and has the same validity as the CNH for people over 70 years old.
It is also possible to request downgrade, a service also done digitally.

The face-to-face service for CNH renewal will be offered during the normal hours of each Poupatempo unit, by appointment, which can be done on the program’s website (www.poupatempo.sp.gov.br), free of charge.
According to the government, the priority will be to serve people who have the document to expire this month and need to make changes to it, such as interstate transfers, for example.
For this first Saturday (11), the appointment was opened on the last Thursday (9). For the next weekend, the schedule will be released on Thursday the 16th.
“Any driver can request a driver’s license renewal through Poupatempo’s digital channels. If face-to-face service is necessary, as in the case of interstate address transfers, for example, the system itself will direct you to the appointment, to perform the service at the post of your choice”, explains Murilo Macedo, director of Prodesp.
According to the state government, between January and November this year, more than 4.4 million citizens entered the Poupatempo license renewal process. Of this total, more than 70%, around 3.2 million requests, were made online, through the website and application.
How to renew the driver’s license
To renew your license, simply access the website www.poupatempo.sp.gov.br or the Poupatempo Digital application
Then click on “Services”, then on “CNH” and then on “Renewal of CNH”.
After confirming or updating the data, the medical examination is scheduled.
Anyone who has a paid job or chooses to include the EAR in the CNH must also undergo a psychological assessment, and will be directed to an accredited professional.
If approved in the exams, it is necessary to pay the issuance fee and wait for the instructions that will be sent by email by the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) to access the CNH Digital, which has the same validity as the physical document, available in the Wallet application Digital of Transit (CDT). The security code to access the digital driver’s license can also be consulted through Poupatempo’s electronic channels.
The citizen will receive the physical driver’s license by mail, at the address registered in the system.
