Sandu Convenes The Security Council Due to the Risk of Undermining The Constitutional Order In Moldova

Moldovan President Maia Sandu convenes a meeting of the Supreme Security Council due to the situation around the Constitutional Court. This was announced on Facebook by the Secretary General of the Presidential Administration of Moldova, Andrei Spinu.

The meeting is scheduled for today, April 23rd. According to Spinu, the Security Council will discuss the risk of undermining the constitutional order in Moldova.

The convocation of an emergency meeting of the SCB is connected with the fact that earlier today the Moldovan parliament adopted a draft resolution on the usurpation of power by the Constitutional Court “in favor of the political interests of the president.” Deputies of the Party of Socialists (leader Igor Dodon) and Pentru Moldova voted for the project.

The draft states the existence of a constitutional and political crisis in Moldova, “which worsened after the decision of the Constitutional Court of April 15”.

In 2020, Maia Sandu won the presidential elections in Moldova, she was a candidate from the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). She defeated the then head of state, the pro-Russian Igor Dodon, in two rounds. Sandu sees Moldova’s future in continued rapprochement with Europe.

  • On April 15, the Constitutional Court of Moldova allowed Sandu to dissolve the parliament due to the fact that the deputies were unable to appoint the government of the country several times.
