In the world so far there have been openly homosexual ministers and heads of government, but never heads of state. To break this crystal ceiling is the Republic of San Marino. From today one of the two regent captains of the Republic of the Titan belongs to the LGBT community.
It is Paolo Rondelli, former vice president of Arcigay Rimini and first ambassador of the Republic to the United States. The head of state has no executive powers in San Marino and remains in charge with his colleague for six months.
Arcigay Rimini, of which Rondelli is a part, writes: «Today, 1 April, Paolo Rondelli, partner of Arcigay Rimini and until 2021 vice president and head of culture, takes office as Regent Captain of the Republic of San Marino. Minister Cartabia and Senator Monica Cirinnà are present for the Italian Republic. It is a historical fact why he is the world’s first openly homosexual head of state and an activist for the rights of the LGBTI community. There are precedents between Premier and ministers, but it is the first time in the world for a head of state ».
Again according to the Arcigay Rimini Facebook page, «San Marino has already embarked on a path of profound revolution on the subject of rights for years. If you think that homosexuality was criminalized until 2004 this path, especially looking at it from the point of view of mired Italy, is astounding. In a few years San Marino has approved equal civil unions (after Italy and only a few months ago there was the referendum on abortion ed) thanks also to the contribution of Paolo Rondelli and the collaboration of Arcigay Rimini, it has inserted the ban of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the constitutional law thanks to a referendum won with an overwhelming majority of 71%, and recently it also finally approved the voluntary termination of pregnancy with 77% ».

Also on Facebook he himself wrote: «I learn that someone has scandalistic prudery about my private life and about my sexual orientation, so much so as to report this to newspapers. I can safely state publicly that I have been a member of the Emiliano Romagnola Naturist Association for years, part of the International Naturist Federation. Naturism is a philosophy of life.
