Samsung is testing the industry’s first 24Gbps GDDR6 memory. It is ready for mass production, designed for next-generation flagship graphics cards, and can also be used in game consoles and enterprise products.
The company says its new memory delivers 30% faster speeds than 18Gb GDDR6 memory, thanks to innovative circuitry and high-tech insulation material that minimizes current leakage. Samsung’s GDDR6 is manufactured on a 10nm process and, combined with a 384-bit bus, delivers up to 1.1TB per second of throughput. That’s roughly 275 Full HD movies.


GDDR6 is highly scalable and can be used not only in the highest performance graphics cards, but also in power efficient laptops. This makes it significantly different from GDDR6X memory, which is characterized by exceptional performance. The latter was developed by NVIDIA in collaboration with Micron. This memory is used in the RTX 3090 Ti graphics accelerator and can process data at a speed of 21 Gb / s. This fact suggests that AMD and NVIDIA will use GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X in their future flagship products in order to simplify designs and lower operating temperatures.
Faster memory eliminates the need for a high memory bus width. Previously, there were video cards with a 512-bit bus and relatively slow GDDR3 memory. In the case of GDDR6, the use of such memory bus widths in consumer video cards will be a thing of the past. This month, the first GDDR6 chips will be shipped to Samsung customers, after which the company plans to release GDDR6 memory to the market.
