Samira Wiley reflects on being a black woman in “The Handmaid’s Tale”

The sixth and last season of the series “The Handmaid’s Tale” Debut an episode every week at the Paramount+streaming service. In exclusive conversation with the CNN the actress Samira Wiley 38, interpreter of the character Moira in the series, reflected on ending the journey in the fictitious world of Gilead.

“It was an honor to be able to tell the story of Moira, especially as a black woman and queer,” he said. “Being able to bring to life another fictional black woman who lives like me, loves like me, was a true honor.”

Moira is lesbian and, with the imposition of the Gilead regime, his relationship with his girlfriend is brutally interrupted. Throughout the series, it becomes an activist for women’s rights and goes to work by helping refugees from the oppressive country.

Wiley stressed that the character has changed her life, helping her to see the world with other eyes and to be, for example, more brave.

“I learned a lot from her in recent years, from her activism, the courage, to be on the front line and talk to others, refugees in this case,” he explained. “I think I have the courage now that I was not in the beginning. I am not so afraid of talking about politics, things I believe. I hope there are people out there watching this series that have had a same kind of impact.”

“Being able to maintain hope, whether in the series or life in our country, globally, I hope that is what people can take from this series,” concluded the actress.

The new season of the series “The Handmaid’s Tale” brings the determination of June (Elisabeth Moss) in the struggle to defeat Gilead once and for all. While Luke (OT FAGBENLE) and moira (Samira Wiley) join resistance, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) tries to reform the regime from the inside. At the same time, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) face their own dilemmas and nick (Max Minghella) is subjected to hard tests of character. The new episodes highlight the importance of hope, courage, solidarity and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom.

The first season of “Handmaid’s Tale” was launched in 2017. Production events are set after a terrorist attack takes the lives of the president of the United States and most of the other elected politicians, giving room for the emergence of a Catholic faction to take power to restore peace.
