The hearing for the extradition of Shabbar Abbas, the father of Saman, the eighteen year old killed in Novellara after refusing an arranged marriage, was postponed for the fourth time. The man was arrested in Pakistan a month ago, after a year and a half on the run. Yesterday he was expected at the Islamabad court, but his lawyer was not in the courtroom. The hearing has been postponed to January 10, just one month before the start of the trial (scheduled for February 10) in Italy.
It seems rather unlikely, at this point, that Shabbar Abbas, one of the five defendants (together with his mother Nazia Shaheen, his uncle Danish Hasnain – who caused the girl’s body to be found – and his cousins Ikram Ijaz and Noumanoulaq Noumanulaq) for the murder of Saman, may you be in Reggio Emilia for the trial date.
The man therefore remains in Islamabad prison. His wife, on the other hand, is still on the run: allegedly fled from the family home in Pakistan shortly before the police raid. Saman’s mother and father had left Italy a few days after April 30, 2021, the day the girl was allegedly killed. The other three accused are in prison in Italy.
Also on Nazia Shaheen the hopes of arrest and extradition are very slim. Pakistani journalist in Italy Ahmad Ejaz, cultural mediator and international aid worker, a Ilgiornale.it he explained: «I don’t think Pakistan will deliver a woman to Italy, moreover a housewife. While for Shabbar, culturally speaking, extradition remains probable, there is some hope. Likewise it is probable that Nazia took refuge with her family of origin, by his brothers, somewhere. Pakistan has never given any assurances that it would give her back too.’
And again: «When I translated the documents, there was a message sent from Pakistan: “Kill this girl”. He had been sent by Nazia’s brother (the policeman who threatened the family of Saqib, Saman’s boyfriend). Saman’s mother’s family is involved in my view. The role of the mother is also evident in the latest video which portrays Saman on the night of her disappearance ».
