Its mayor Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeidaa powerful member of the right-wing party Partido Popularwas pranked by a Russian comedian who convinced him he was the mayor of KievVitali Klitschko.
Their conversation took place last June, but has now seen the light of day. During his conversation, Martinez-Almeida appeared open to facilitating the return of refugees to Ukraine in order to fight against Russia – which is against international law.
Russian comedians Vovan and Lexus, however, it is not the first time they have deceived a Spanish politician. In 2017, they had played a prank on the then Minister of Defense, Maria Dolores de Cospedalamid the crisis in Catalonia.
In the 17-minute video – which the Madrid municipality said automatically stopped the discussion once they realized it was a hoax – Martinez-Almeida talks comfortably about the NATO Summit hosted in the Spanish capital, the economic problems that the war in Ukraine and other issues have caused.
Martinez-Almeida’s chat with the alleged Klitschko began with questions such as the number of Ukrainian refugees Madrid has taken in, while the Spanish city’s mayor is heard speaking about the need “to punish the Russians”. He is reportedly disappointed that no Russian assets were found in Madrid to exploit.
And then it was time for the… kazoo: “Can you deport the refugees so they can finally go back to the front instead of being on the beaches in Spain?”. Martinez-Almeida appears willing to facilitate the process, but struggles to understand English and does not respond easily.
Gay Pride of the Order of Azov
The “fake” Klitschko’s comments then became more and more… far-fetched, but Martinez-Almeida didn’t understand that it was all a hoax.
The Russian comedian tells him that Ukraine wants to organize a Gay Pride because there are many homosexuals in the Azov Order. At the same time, he tells him that he wants to name it in honor of Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian nationalist leader who collaborated with the Nazis in World War II. The mayor of Madrid does not know who he is and asks: “Is he a symbol of the gay community?”.
Russian comedians Vovan and Lexus (Alexei Stolyanov and Vladimir Kuznetsov) also attempted to prank the mayors of Vienna and Berlin. Elton John and former US President George W. Bush, among others, have fallen victim to them in the past.
