Russian government wants presidential elections in 2024, says Putin spokesman

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian Presidency, said the government intends to hold presidential elections in 2024, despite the war with Ukraine.

He said President Vladimir Putin “underlined the need to comply with all the requirements of democracy and the constitution and, accordingly, to hold the elections.”

Putin has been in the Kremlin since 2012, with a re-election on the way six years ago. Before that, he held the position between 2000 and 2008. He was Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and, again, in the interval between the two periods in the Executive, from 2008 to 2012.

In 2021, Putin signed a law allowing him to run for two more presidential terms when his current term ends and thus could run for re-election next year.
