The information publication Vedomosti, citing its sources, reported that RuVDS (a Russian hosting provider of VPS servers) and Orbital Express (a company that delivers small spacecraft to near-earth orbit) entered into a partnership agreement to conduct a unique experiment. Data representatives of the company plan to launch and subsequently operate a data processing center, which will be located in Earth orbit. The authors of this project believe that a data center in space will allow storing information with a higher level of security, which will be of interest to both banks and data storage services or blockchain technology operators.
It is planned to launch a satellite-server that will process data into low-earth orbit in 2022 – the Soyuz will act as a carrier rocket, and the cost of cargo delivery is calculated according to the tariff of Glavkosmos Launch Services (a subsidiary of Roskosmos). That is, for 1 kilogram of weight delivered to Earth’s orbit, the authors of the project will have to pay 15 thousand dollars, and the weight of the first experimental satellite-server is 5 kilograms. Based on this, the launch of the first data center in orbit will cost the representatives of the two companies about 75 thousand dollars – not a very large amount against the background of the emerging opportunities.
Also, representatives of the new project announced in what scenarios their space data center will work. The server will receive information from various spacecraft, initially processing them on its hardware, after which it will be transmitted to Earth in a filtered form. For example, in this way it will be possible to get rid of low-quality images from space, which only increase the load on the network during data transmission – due to this, according to the authors of the experimental program, it will be possible to optimize the costs of space activities.
