Russian attacks in Ukraine's Kharkiv region kill at least 11

Russia attacked a busy lakeside resort on the outskirts of Ukraine's second city and villages in the neighboring region on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens.

The missile attacks were the latest in Russia's ongoing offensive in northeastern Ukraine.

Valentyna, 69, had blood running down her face in the lakeside resort area where her home was destroyed. Her husband was killed by the water, she said, pointing to the area near the shore where there was now a crater, debris and dead bodies.

“Losing my husband, losing my home, losing everything in the world, it hurts, it hurts me,” she said.

Prosecutors said six people were killed in the region, one was still missing and 27 were injured.

Rescuers said the initial attack was followed by a second attack about 20 minutes later, targeting local emergency workers in what they called a “double tap.”

“There were never any soldiers here,” said Yaroslav Trofimko, a police inspector who arrived after the first attack. “It was Sunday, people should be here to rest, children, pregnant women, they were resting, enjoying a normal life.”

Another five people were killed and nine were injured in two villages in the Kupiansk district. Local governor Oleh Syniehubov said Russian forces shelled the region with a multiple rocket launcher.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy again called on Western allies to provide Kiev with additional air defense systems to protect Kharkiv and other cities.

“The world can stop Russian terror and to do so the lack of political will among leaders must be overcome,” Zelenskiy said on Telegram.

The president also said that two Patriot missile defense systems “will make a fundamental difference.”

“Air defense systems for other cities and sufficient support for soldiers on the front line would guarantee Russia’s defeat,” he added.
