Russia will build a road bridge for North Korea, says Ambassador

Russia and North Korea will soon start building a highway bridge over the Tumen River between the two countries, Russia ambassador told Pyongyang to the Ria State News Agency.

The assembly of the bridge was decided during a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to North Korea in 2024, when the two countries signed a comprehensive agreement of strategic partnership.

The road bridge will be built near the existing rail bridge “Bridge of Friendship”, which was commissioned in 1959 after the Korea War. An old wooden bridge used to cross the border in the early twentieth century, but was destroyed, according to Russian media.

“The construction of the bridge has not yet begun,” said Alexander Matsegora, Russia Ambassador in North Korea, Ria.

“The parties are doing preparatory work, finalizing the project documentation, forming construction teams and equipment columns,” he said.

The road bridge, which has been under discussion for years, will be 850 meters and will connect to the Russian road system.

South Korea satellite image analysis company SI Analytics commented in a March 5 report that the work in the bridge and road connections found to have started.

“With the rapid construction of this bridge following the existing rail connection, the only passage between North Korea and Russia, an increased increase in economic, social and military exchanges is anticipated,” says the report.

“This could potentially lead to gradual erosion of the effectiveness of international sanctions against North Korea and Russia.”
