Russia and Ukraine each swapped 95 prisoners of war on Wednesday (17) after the United Arab Emirates acted as an intermediary, the Russian Defense Ministry and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The Russian Defense Ministry, in a statement on the Telegram messaging app, said returning Russian soldiers would be flown to Moscow for medical examinations and physical and psychological rehabilitation.
He said the freed troops faced “mortal danger” in Ukrainian captivity.
Ukrainian President Zelensky said the released Ukrainian prisoners were members of the Ukrainian armed forces, the national guard and the border guard service.
Zelensky thanked the UAE for its help in facilitating the exchange.
The prisoner swap was the third of its kind in the past seven weeks.
In the latest swap, which took place in June and was also facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Ukraine each returned 90 prisoners.
