Russia tests nuclear submarine and launches intercontinental missile

Russia’s new nuclear submarine, called Emperor Alexander III, carried out a successful test launch of the Bulava ballistic missile, designed to carry nuclear warheads, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday (5).

“Firing a ballistic missile is the final element of state tests, after which a decision will be made to accept the cruiser into the Navy,” explained the Ministry of Defense.

President Vladimir Putin has been pressing Russia to maintain its nuclear deterrent to combat what he calls growing security threats as ties between Moscow and the West reach new lows due to the war against the Ukrainians.

The intercontinental missile, launched from an underwater position in the White Sea off the northern coast of Russia, hit a target thousands of kilometers away on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East.

The ministry did not say when the test took place.

The Borei-class strategic missile cruiser is equipped with 16 Bulava missiles and modern torpedo weapons.

Putin attended a ceremony in December that put Emperor Alexander III to use, state news agency TASS said.

The Navy has three Borei-class nuclear submarines in service – one is completing tests and three others are under construction.

The 12-meter Bulava missile, which has an estimated range of around 8,000 km and can carry up to six nuclear warheads, has become the main element of the naval part of Russia’s nuclear triad.
