The United Nations Security Council met this Friday (11) to discuss an alleged program of biological and chemical weapons in Ukraine. The UN says it does not know any information on the matter.
At the request of Russia, the UN Security Council met to discuss the existence of an alleged chemical and biological weapons program in Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, there would be more than 30 laboratories working with the help of US scientists.
Last Tuesday, Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland testified before the Senate Foreign Relations committee and, in response to Senator Marco Rubio, said that Ukraine has biological laboratories, and that the US government was concerned to prevent Russians to seize the elements and products of these institutes.
In 2005, the Pentagon closed an agreement with Ukraine and began to provide research assistance to several laboratories in the country, with the objective, according to the US government, of increasing their security.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said it had advised Ukraine to destroy contagious pathogens that, in the event of a leak, because of the war, could cause epidemics.
The UN representative for disarmament affairs, Izumi nakamitsu, said he was not aware of the existence of such a program. Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia replied: “Of course, it’s a secret program.”
Ukraine has signed the international treaty banning biological weapons, as have the United States and Russia. In total, 180 countries are signatories to the treaty that bans the manufacture, stockpiling and use of these weapons.
The United States and European allies have accused the Russians of lying once again in the UN Security Council.
“Russia has a history of falsely accusing other countries of committing the violations that Russia is committing,” said US Ambassador Lindas Thomas-Greenfield.
She said she was concerned that the Kremlin could order the use of chemical or biological agents against the Ukrainian people.
China did not dismiss the complaint or confirm the data, but said it should be taken seriously and investigated.
Brazilian ambassador João Genésio de Almeida Filho said that any violation of the biological weapons convention is extremely serious and, therefore, must be accompanied by solid evidence.
Asked about the matter, US President Joe Biden said that Vladimir Putin will pay a heavy price if he commits an attack with chemical and biological weapons.
