Russia says it has taken control of four settlements in eastern Ukraine

Russian forces have taken control of the settlements of Orlivka, Komyshivka, Mykolaivka and Novozhelanne in eastern Ukraine, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Friday (30).

Reuters was unable to independently verify the information.

The four sites in the Donetsk region are east of Pokrovsk, a strategic transportation and evacuation hub.

The Russian Defense Ministry also said its forces captured the town of Kostiantynivka, further north in the Donetsk region, and the village of Synkivka in the Kharkiv region.

Russia’s alleged gains come as Ukraine continues its incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

Ukraine launched a surprise operation in Kursk, western Russia, on August 6. The country says it controls about 100 settlements and has advanced up to 35 km (22 miles) into the area.

Kiev stresses that the offensive is designed to protect its border settlements from constant Russian attacks. It is one of the boldest moves since the war began in 2022.

Russia called Ukraine’s Kursk operation a “major provocation” and said it would retaliate. On Monday (26), it launched more than 200 missiles and drones into the country, targeting the energy sector in one of the biggest such attacks of the war.
