Russia has stated that two of its missiles reached a meeting of Ukrainian military officers on Sunday (13) in the city of Sumy, where Ukraine stated that the Russian attacks killed 34 people and wounded 117.
The Russian Ministry of Defense accused Ukraine of using civilians as human shields by placing military facilities and holding events involving soldiers in the center of a densely populated city.
There was no immediate response from Kiev to the accusation of “human shield.”
The Ministry of Defense stated that its forces fired “two iskander-M tactical missiles at the scene of the meeting” what it called the operational tactical group of the Ukraine Armed Forces.
Authorities claimed that more than 60 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the offensive.
On Sunday, President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded a hard international response against Moscow on the attack, which took place while US President Donald Trump fights to progress in his promise to quickly end the war.
“Only scoundrels can act like this, taking the lives of ordinary people,” said Zelensky, noting that the attack occurred on Branches Sunday when some people were going to church.
The leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy condemned the attack. Trump, when asked about the Russian offensive, said it was terrible.
“And I was told that they made a mistake,” he said, without giving more details. “But I think it’s a horrible thing.”
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked in his daily briefing about how Kremlin saw Trump’s comment and if the attack had been led by mistake.
He replied that the Russian government did not comment on the course of war and that this was a matter for the Ministry of Defense.
“I can only repeat and remember the repeated statements of our president and our military representatives that our military attack exclusively military targets and adjacent to them,” he said.
