The Russian government said on Tuesday that Ukraine did not respond to many offers by Russian President Vladimir Putin to start direct peace negotiations. Kremlin also said it was unclear if Kiev would join the three-day ceasefire that Putin announced for next month.
“It was President Putin who repeatedly stated that Russia is ready, without any preview, to start the negotiation process,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “So far, we have not heard any response from the Kiev regime,” he added.
Putin declared on Monday (28) a three-day ceasefire in the war in Ukraine, from May 8-10, when Russia plans sumptuous celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of the Nazi Germany in World War II.
Ukraine, in response, questioned why Moscow would not agree with its call for a ceasefire lasting at least 30 days and immediate start.
“We value people’s lives and not parades,” said President Volodymr Zelensky.
Peskov said it was “very difficult to understand” if Ukraine intended to join the ceasefire.
