Russia promises retaliation against Moldova for joining EU sanctions

Russia said this Friday (24) that Moldova’s decision to adhere to European Union sanctions against the country is a hostile step and aims to destroy ties with Moscow. The Russian government promised to retaliate.

The Foreign Ministry statement was issued in response to a vote in Moldova’s Parliament agreeing to adhere to the sanctions as part of measures to amend its legislation and make its bid to join the European Union eligible.

“We consider this as another hostile step by the Moldovan leadership, which is fully integrated into the anti-Russia campaign of the ‘collective West’,” the Russian ministry said in a statement.

“Their goal is the complete destruction of relations between Russia and Moldova, which, through the fault of the authorities in Chisinau, are already in a very deplorable state.”

Moscow will retaliate, the ministry added.

The 62 deputies from Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s Action and Solidarity Party supported the legislation, ensuring its approval in the Assembly in the capital Chisinau.

Among its provisions are guidelines regarding actions to be taken against individuals and institutions subject to sanctions imposed on Russia in connection with the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The legislation is also intended to protect against undue influence from Russian oligarchs.
