Russia: MPs call for ban on adoption of children from ‘unfriendly countries’

Its MPs of Russia have submitted a bill to the Lower House of Parliament and are asking to ban the adoptions carried out in the country by citizens coming from “unfriendly states”.

As reported by the Reuters agency, the drafters of the bill emphasized that “sending our children to grow up in ‘unfriendly countries’ it is a blow to the future of the nation». Nonetheless, allows the bans to be lifted adoption in the future if a given country stops carrying out “unfriendly actions” against Russia.

Notably, Russia previously banned adoptions by American citizens under the controversial 2012 Dima Yakovlev Act, named after a Russian child who died of neglect shortly after being adopted by an American family.

Also, the list of Russia’s unfriendly countries expanded after several states imposed sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It currently includes the United States, the United Kingdom, all member states of the European Union, as well as Japan and South Korea.
