Russia: Moscow deports hundreds of Germans

In the last few hours, the “diplomatic war” that has been raging between Moscow and Berlin for some time. Initially cause, about a month ago, stood decision of the German government to reduce the number of Russian diplomats in Germany. But it was mainly about employees of the Russian secret services who were operating in Germany under the “diplomatic cloak”. In retaliation Moscow had also announced a reduction in the number of German diplomats on Russian soil.

As German media have reported since the morning, hundreds of German diplomats, but mainly teachers and professors of the German School in Moscow, workers at the branches of the Goethe Institute in Russia, as well as workers at German artistic organizations, will have to leave Russia immediately, as a consequence of the unprecedented ongoing diplomatic dispute between the two capitals.

Süddeutsche Zeitung was the first to report the news. Then followed an official confirmation from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the public network ARD.

Upper limit on German representation

According to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Moscow proceeded to establish an upper limit on the number of German diplomats and employees in other German institutions on Russian soil. This decision is expected to apply in full from June 1, which in practice leads to the reduction of important positions in German diplomatic authorities and independent German bodies based in Russia.

From now on, the aim of the German government, as broadcast by the ARD network, is to maintain in Russia the minimum possible German diplomatic representation as well as a limited presence of representatives of other German bodies.

According to information from SZ, among the employees affected by the decisions of the Russian government are several Russian nationals working for German agencies.
