More than 200 people have been arrested in Russia today in protest war in Ukrainesaid the non – governmental organization OVD-Info, which monitors arrests in the country.
According to the announcement, at least 211 people have been arrested in demonstrations made in 17 Russian cities.
In Moscow, a sit-in protest was scheduled for 11 a.m. in Zariantie Park, very close to the Kremlin. Shortly afterwards, police began arresting those sitting on the park benches amid heavy snowfall. “No to the war in Ukraine,” shouted an arrested young woman holding a bouquet of tulips.
More than 30 police trucks were deployed around the park. A French Agency journalist said at least 10 arrests had been made.
Sit-ins were scheduled for today in about 30 cities, from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg and Sochi.
Organizers said they also wanted to protest “the collapse of the Russian economy” against President Vladimir Putin and in favor of the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
In St. Petersburg, about 40 people had gathered at the site of the sit-in protest, but it was not clear if they were protesters. However, at least 25 of them were arrested.
The protesters are in danger of being fined or even sentenced to prison. According to OVD-Info, more than 15,000 people have been arrested in anti-war demonstrations since the start of the war on February 24.
