Russia launches offensive in Donetsk and Luhansk regions

Russia has launched an offensive in the Donbass region, in the breakaway areas of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine. The western city of Lviv, which is home to refugees, was also attacked.

For the International Analyst CNN Lourival Sant’Anna, the deficiencies in morale and coordination that the Russians had when the war spread to more regions will become even more evident now that it is concentrated in the east.

“Because when there is a very concentrated geography, all this superiority is in heavy weapons and air superiority decreases in importance, because you will have a concentration of troops and you will have more man-to-man battles and morale is very low”, he explains.

Going to the Kharkiv region, which has suffered heavy bombing, and where Russian military supplies are, in Lourival’s opinion, Ukrainian forces would not be able to cut through Russia’s battle lines. He explains that this would happen “because there is now a very large concentration of battalions of tactical groups. Eleven regrouped just to secure these supply lines.”

However, in his view, the counterattack that the Ukrainians made in the region was very interesting, “because the Russians were wanting to attack Izyum and they had to come and defend against this counterattack.”

“So this shows how much the Ukrainians are capable of undoing the Russians’ tactics on the ground. That’s why I say that when we start to look from today and from tomorrow on what will happen there in the east, we will have a much more balanced thing between Ukrainians and Russians. Much more than before when air sovereignty and large heavy weapons spoke louder in a much larger geographic space.”

In the context, Lourival indicates that a balance of forces can be reached, due to the lack of Russian command and the Ukrainian troops being devastated and weakened. But that would be “very different for Russia to achieve its tactical objective in this region which is to dominate the whole of Donbass.”

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), at the moment, is betting all its chips that it could beat the Russians. For this, it is sending weapons to the Ukrainians, which is being decisive, explaining the concept of “war by proxy”.

The attack in Lviv, near the Polish border, exemplifies the issue. The Russians are trying to cut the supply lines being sent, which can be trickier from a distance, but not impossible.
