Three thousand Russian soldiers launched exercises with live ammunition, including tanks in western Russia on Tuesday, including in areas close to Ukraine, the Interfax news agency reported, citing the military.
Russia has upset the West with the accumulation of troops near Ukraine and has demanded that Washington pledge never to allow Ukraine to join NATO or expand its military alliance to the east, a proposal the United States refuses to accept.
The announcement of the exercises came a day after Russia and the United States held talks on Moscow’s security proposals.
Interfax quoted the Western Military District as saying that the exercises would take place in the Smolensk region near the border with Belarus and in the Voronezh, Belgorod and Bryansk regions closer to Ukraine.
He said 300 tanks and weapons would be involved, including T-72B3 tanks, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles and regular firearms.
He said the exercises would be practiced in armored vehicle and artillery fire, in organizing marches during active enemy sabotage and in reconnaissance and fortification equipment activities.
Washington has urged Moscow to withdraw its 100,000 troops from the border with Ukraine, raising concerns in Ukraine and the West about a possible new invasion eight years after Russia invaded Crimea.
Moscow has stated that it has no intention of attacking and has every right to bring its troops to its own territory and to conduct military exercises as it sees fit.
