Russia: Donetsk has opened an ’embassy’ in Moscow

The separatist region of Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine, today opened an “embassy” in Moscow, while denouncing the worsening situation on the front, where fighting continues fiercely.

“In recent days the situation has deteriorated drastically,” said Natalya Nikanorova, the “foreign minister” of the self-proclaimed “People’s Republic” of Donetsk.

“We are in no rush,” he added, when asked if the region would eventually be incorporated into Russia. “The initial goal is to liberate the Republic,” he continued, adopting the rhetoric used by Russia for war. “Then a referendum will be held, in due course, and we will see what the will of the people is,” he said, clarifying that in such a case the status of the “embassy” would change.

Russian President Vladimir Putin in February recognized the independence of Luhansk and Donetsk, the two regions that make up the Donbas basin, and a few days later the Russian army invaded Ukraine.

Nikanarova was accompanied by Donetsk’s “ambassador” in Moscow, Olga Makeyeva. The two women spoke to reporters in the courtyard of the building where the “embassy” will be housed, in a central district of Moscow. No high-ranking Russian officials attended the opening.
