Russia considers increased NATO military activity in the Arctic “worrying”

Russia is concerned about increased activity by North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces in the Arctic and sees risks of “unintentional incidents” occurring in the region, Tass news agency said, citing Russian ambassador Nikolai Korchunov on Sunday. (17).

In March, Finland and Sweden, which are considering joining the US-led military alliance, held combined NATO military exercises.

The exercise was long planned, but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 increased the intensity of the war game. Moscow describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation”.

“The recent increase in NATO activity in the Arctic is cause for concern. Another large-scale alliance military exercise was recently held in northern Norway. In our opinion, this does not contribute to the security of the region,” Korchunov said.

According to Korchunov, such activity increases the risk of “unintentional incidents”, which, in addition to security risks, can also cause serious damage to the Arctic ecosystem. He didn’t specify what kind of incident he might be referring to.

Korchunov, one of President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies, warned NATO on Thursday that if Sweden and Finland join NATO, Russia will deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in a European enclave.
