Russia announces “operational pause” to restore combat capability

Moscow announced on Thursday an “operational pause” in Ukraine for Russian troops to restore combat capability, a report contradicted by the US Institute for the Study of War.

“Units that performed combat missions during the special military operation are taking steps to replenish combat capabilities. The military has the opportunity to relax, receive letters and parcels from home,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov wrote in a statement, quoted by the Europa Press news agency.

Konashenkov did not specify the expected duration of this break or in which areas the combat is being implemented.

On the other hand, the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assured that Russian forces did not cease hostilities and “it is unlikely that they will”.

“Russian forces still carried out limited ground offensives and air, artillery and missile strikes on all axes on July 7, and are likely to continue to be limited to small-scale offensive actions as they restore forces and the conditions for a more significant offensive”, said the ISW on the social network Twitter.

In an interview with former lawyer Mark Feigin — known for his activism against Russian President Vladimir Putin — posted on the YouTube platform, Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych highlighted that Ukrainian attacks on Russian warehouses had prompted Russian troops to pause.

“The attacks on the warehouses significantly weakened the [de atacar] in a quick and organized way. (…) Its reserves are scarce and will decrease”, explained Arestovych, in statements published by the Ukrainian broadcaster TCH.

“The pace of the offensive has slowed down,” he noted.
