This Thursday (24), Russia and Ukraine exchanged new accusations about the uncertainty in peace negotiations. Moscow accuses Volodymyr Zelensky of blocking diplomacy, while Kiev says Vladimir Putin wants war to continue.
US President Donald Trump said he will stop trying to negotiate an agreement to end the war between the two countries they do not make a deal soon.
The control of Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, emerged as one of the main frictional points between Russia and Ukraine, and Zelensky annoyed Trump by reiterating on Tuesday that he would not recognize the peninsula as part of Russia.
Trump wrote on social networks on Wednesday (23) that Crimea was lost for years “and is not even a point of discussion.”
Asked about this observation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a brief press conference on Thursday (24) in Moscow that Trump’s position “completely corresponds to our understanding and what we have said for a long time.”
Peskov also pointed out that Russia continues to work with Americans to reach a peace agreement that ensures that Moscow’s interests are taken into consideration.
Already the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, argued in a separate meeting that it is becoming clearer that Zelensky has no ability to negotiate an agreement to end the war.
She accused him of making negotiations over Ukraine unfeasible in London, involving US, Ukrainian, and European authorities, and said the Ukrainian leader was clearly ready to “destroy the emerging peace process at any cost.”
“Yesterday, Zelensky categorically refused to make any concessions, and expressed his desire to negotiate only a ceasefire-and yet in his own terms,” added Zakharova.
Ukraine states that she wants just peace and that Russia is dragging on negotiations and trying to gain time to gain more Ukrainian lands, as well as the territory she already has in Crimea and in four eastern regions of the country.
The Ukrainian authorities intensified their criticism after a Russian attack with missiles and drones at night in Kiev, which killed at least eight people.
“Yesterday’s Russian maximalist demands for Ukraine to withdraw from its regions, combined with these brutal attacks, show that Russia, not Ukraine, is the obstacle to peace,” wrote Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Syhiba in X.
“Putin demonstrates through his actions, not words, that he does not respect any peace effort and only wants to continue the war,” said Syhiba.
